A Tradition of Excellence
Stewarts Creek Middle School opened its doors in 2006 and throughout its history, the Stewarts Creek Middle School band program has continued to grow and consistently includes over 200 students each year.
In 2013 and again in 2017, the Advanced Band earned the distinction of performing for the Tennessee Music Education Association annual conference. For the past seventeen years, the SCMS Band has received all Superior ratings at the MTSBOA Concert Performance Assessment and has earned numerous Sweepstakes Awards from the Tennessee Bandmasters Association and Awards of Distinction from the American School Band Directors Association.
The band has performed in Walt Disney World in Orlando and has traveled to Atlanta, Georgia; Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; Santa Claus, Indiana; and Cincinnati, Ohio. The SCMS Jazz Band has performed for the Murfreesboro Main Street Jazz Fest and has been featured multiple times during the “Spotlight on Education” for the Rutherford County Board of Education. SCMS Band students have been accepted into All-Midstate Bands, All-County Bands, and the Ethos Youth Ensembles.
SCMS Band alumni have become top players in their high school bands and been accepted into numerous collegiate honor bands, Governor’s School for the Arts, the Nashville Symphony's Accelerando program, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day All-Star Marching Band, the U.S. Army All-American Band, and the prestigious Interlochen Summer Arts Camp.

The SCMS Band program is led by two full-time band directors. Beginning Band is open to all interested sixth grade students who come to SCMS from five Rutherford county elementary schools with active music programs. Seventh and eighth grade band members perform as separate ensembles, each participates in the Middle Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association's Concert Performance Assessment.
A large number of SCMS Band members participate in private lessons. Students take advantage of off-campus lesson opportunities as well as in-school lessons that occur during band classes or after school. The SCM Music Booster organization currently organizes an seven-member private lesson staff that is approved by Rutherford County Schools. All in-school private lesson teachers have at least a Bachelors degree in music and are active professional performers and teachers.
Each year, at least sixty percent of SCMS Band members participate in a Solo and Ensemble Performance Assessment. The SCMS 7th & 8th grade bands perform multiple concerts per year and serve as a pep band for home football and basketball games.
The SCMS Jazz Band is an auditioned ensemble that rehearses after school once each week. Students may attend two weeks of open rehearsals in late September prior to the auditions. The group utilizes a traditional Big Band instrumentation and frequently performs throughout the Spring including a standing performance at Jazz Fest.
Students who participate in the SCMS Band program continue to perform in the band programs at Stewarts Creek High School.
